Swing Set Safety
Swing sets provide a way for children of all ages to play and be active. Children can be kept safe from injuries when simple safety guidelines are followed. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Equipment
-
Children should play on a swing set that is age appropriate. Surfaces should not be more than 4 feet high for preschool-age children and 6 feet high for school-age children. Swings should be 8 inches apart and should not have monkey bars above them.
Ground
-
Swing set safety includes the ground area around the play structure. The ground should be covered with six to 12 inches of wood chips, sand or mulch. The area should be clear of objects that could injure a child if she falls on them.
-
Clothing
-
When playing on a swing set, children should not wear clothing with drawstrings, loops or other items that could become caught and cause strangulation.
Surfaces
-
All surfaces should be checked to ensure no bolts, screws or hardware are protruding out of the structure. Hot metal and plastic surfaces can burn a child, so be sure to check the swing set before a child plays on it.
Rules
-
Children should never be left unsupervised while playing on a swing set. Teach children not to participate in unsafe activities such as wrestling, pushing or walking in front of children using the swings.
