What Is a Tall Flowering Plant?
A flowering plant can be defined in scientific terms, but the word, "tall" is a descriptive adjective that is often applied to many different types of plants ranging from a sunflower to a redwood tree.

A Flowering Plant
-
Flowering plants are the most recently evolved members of the plant kingdom and are defined by male reproductive parts that produce pollen, and a protected, female reproductive unit that receives the pollen. These parts often occur within a specialized part of the plant, called a flower.
Annual Herbaceous Plants
-
Annual herbaceous plants have one yearly cycle to grow, reproduce and produce seeds, so in most cases, height is limited by the length of the growing season and the genetic makeup of the plant. Sunflowers, Bee plants and Cosmos are some tall annual flowering plants.
-
Biennial Flowering Plants
-
Some herbaceous plants, known as biennials, have a two-year life cycle, whereby the plant does not produce a flower until the second year. The extra year of growth can allow for a taller plant. Biennials such as Foxglove and Hollyhocks are some of the tallest biennial flowering plants.
Perennial Flowering Plant
-
A perennial plant has a life cycle that lasts for more than two years. Flowering perennial plants can live many years and as a result they are sometimes capable of reaching a large height.
Some Tall Trees
-
A flowering plant reaches its greatest heights among the trees. The tulip poplar, Eucalyptus and white oak are some of the tallest flowering plants that grow in the United States.
