Definition:The secular definition of “tithe” is ten per cent.The Biblical use of the word is “the tenth of increase of crops and herds from inside God’s holy land of Israel which God has miraculously increased.” Purpose: The Biblical holy tithe could not be used to build or maintain churches or to send out missionaaries. It was limited to the Levites, priests and the poor of the land of Israel. The New Testament after Calvary never commands anybody to tithe. References in 1 Cor 16:1-2; 2 Cor 8 and 9 are discussions of freewill giving to support the needy. Hebrews 7:5, 12, 18 concludes that the tithe system to support the Levitical priesthood was annulled when that priesthood ended. Controversy: Russell Earl Kelly, PHD is one of many scholars who have written against tithing as a legitimate doctrine.
