What Makes Glucose?

Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body. When glucose levels get too low, the body's cells don't function correctly.

  1. Definition

    • Glucose is defined as a simple sugar that is found in the blood and is the main sugar in the body.

    Production

    • The body makes glucose from fats, proteins and carbohydrates. The body breaks down food and converts the fats, proteins and carbohydrates into simple sugars so the body can use it for energy.

    Low Levels vs. High Levels

    • When there isn't enough glucose in the body, the glucose levels fall (hypoglycemia). When the levels rise, it's called hyperglycemia. To combat the rise in glucose, insulin is released into the body.

    Other Sources

    • Dextrose is another term for glucose. In hospital settings, health professionals can use an IV to provide dextrose to a patient to help their glucose levels rise, should the levels fall. A person can also eat sugary foods such as candy to help combat falling glucose levels.

    Glucose-Elevating Agent

    • Glucose is known as a "glucose-elevating agent," meaning it helps the blood sugar levels in your body rise. Glucagon is another glucose-elevating agent.
