Special education specialists work with parents, teachers and special needs children in a resource setting. They develop individual education plans and adapt curriculum to fit student needs.

Enroll in a Four-Year College or University

Most special education specialists must earn a bachelor's degree in special education. Some states require candidates to hold a master's degree in the field.

Complete Student Teaching

During the last year of coursework, candidates must teach in a classroom under the supervision of a qualified instructor.

Complete the Testing Requirements

Candidates for certification must pass a rigorous state-approved test before a license is granted.

Complete a Background Check

Any individual who works with children will be required to undergo a background check. Most states also require fingerprint clearance.

Apply For Licensure

After completing all of the requirements for certification, a candidate may apply for a state license to teach special education.

Job Outlook and Salary

Special educators are in high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, their beginning salary is roughly $40,000.
