Difference Between Yasmin & Yaz Birth Control

Difference Between Yasmin & Yaz Birth Control thumbnail
Yaz and Yasmin oral contraceptives have several differences.

Although Yaz and Yasmin oral contraceptives contain the same active ingredients, there are several differences between these two birth control options.

  1. Active Ingredients

    • The most significant ingredient difference between Yasmin and Yaz is that Yasmin contains 3 mg of drospirenone and 0.03 mg of ethinyl estradiol; Yaz has 3 mg of drospirenone and 0.02 mg of ethinyl estradiol.

    Dosing

    • An important difference between Yasmin and Yaz is dosing; while Yasmin, like most birth control pills, is a 21-day per month pill, with seven inactive pills; Yaz is a 24-day per month pill, with four inactive pills.

    PMDD

    • Yaz, unlike Yasmin, is recommended not only for contraception, but also for treatment of PMDD, or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, which is characterized by symptoms, including extreme mood changes and physical symptoms, such as breast tenderness and aches and pains that interfere with daily activities.

    Menstruation

    • The fact that Yaz has fewer inactive pills than Yasmin often results in shorter, lighter menstrual periods.

    Acne

    • Yaz is prescribed for treatment of mild to moderate acne; Yasmin is not prescribed for acne treatment.
