Severe Itching on Dogs
It is not unusual for a dog to occasionally itch or scratch. However, severe itching indicates a more serious problem. Owners who notice their dog excessively itching or scratching should seek veterinary care immediately.

Causes
-
There are hundreds of causes of severe itching in dogs. Common causes include ticks, fleas, allergies, internal parasites, lice, seborrhea, mange, bacterial infections and fungal infections such as ringworm or yeast.
Symptoms
-
Additional symptoms can vary from dog to dog, depending on the underlying causes. These may include redness or swelling of the skin, open wounds from excessive itching, hair loss and skin lesions.
-
Diagnosis
-
At the veterinarian's office, affected animals undergo a physical exam. Additional tests may be made, such as cultures from the affected skin, blood tests or urinalysis.
Treatment
-
Because of the high number of potential causes, treatments for severe canine itching will vary. Options include a change in diet; topical anti-itch shampoos or sprays; steroids; flea or tick treatments; and antibiotics or anti-fungal medications.
Prevention
-
Some cases of severe itching can be prevented. Keeping dogs up to date on vaccines and flea/tick medications can help keep internal and external parasites at bay.
