Thrombocytopenia in Maltese Dogs

Any Maltese can develop thrombocytopenia.

In dogs, thrombocytopenia is a term for lower-than-normal levels of platelets in the blood. Maltese dogs--like any purebred dog--can develop a variety of health issues, including thrombocytopenia.

Causes

Causes of canine thrombocytopenia include various medications, toxins, Addison's disease, viral infections, tumors, vitamin deficiencies and various immune disorders that cause premature destruction of platelets.

Symptoms

Symptoms of thrombocytopenia in a Maltese include ecchymoses (bruising of the skin), lethargy, epistaxis (nose bleeds), weakness, sclera (red spots on the whites of the eyes), hematuria (blood in the urine) and hematochezia (blood in the stool).

Diagnosis

Unfortunately, diagnosing the underlying cause of thrombocytopenia in a Maltese is difficult. The affected dog may undergo a variety of tests--including a urinalysis or blood tests--to rule out other causes of illnesses.

Treatment

Treatment options for canine thrombocytopenia will depend on the underlying cause. Treatments may include steroids, spleen removal, blood transfusions, antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs or immunosuppressive medications.

At Home

While at home, the affected Maltese should be kept calm to prevent bleeding or bruising until thrombocytopenia has resolved. If symptoms do not clear up or return, seek veterinary care immediately.
