The U.S. has tightened restrictions on work visas for foreign nationals. Those who violate restrictions are subject to deportation and denial of future visa applications. The U.S. State Department cites specific restrictions for each type of work visa.

  1. B1 Visitor for Business Visa

    • The B1 visa permits short term business visits for visitors not being paid any form of compensation.

    D1 Alien Crewman

    • The D1 visa is issued to foreign employees on vessels or aircraft.

    G1-4 Visas for Employees of International Organizations

    • These visas permit work as a representative of an International organization. G5 visas permit personal work when employed by G1-4 visa holders.

    H1B Temporary Workers in Specialty Classifications

    • This visa permits employment with a company that has received approval of an INS application. The employment term is 3 years, with a possible 3-year extension.

    H2A & B Skilled or Unskilled and Agricultural Laborers

    • Workers with these visas may work only for petitioning employers and only for a specified period of time.
