Danger in Taking Glutamine & Glucosamine Together

Glutamine and glucosamine may have similar sounding names, but these two very different compounds that can be purchased over-the-counter as nutritional supplements. Neither has been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since the FDA does not strictly regulate supplements. However, extensive research has illuminated the role these substances play in the human body.

  1. Glutamine

    • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, glutamine "is the most abundant amino acid (protein building block) in the body."

    Glucosamine

    • Glucosamine is a natural compound found in normal cartilage and synovial (joint) fluid, says the Mayo Clinic.

    Use of Glutamine

    • Glutamine remove ammonia from the body. It also helps to maintain immune, brain and digestive function. Glutamine supplements help support the immune system, reduce infection and improve intestinal absorption of nutrients.

    Use of Glucosamine

    • Since glucosamine is naturally found in the cartilage and fluid of joints, it is used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, especially in the knee. Osteoarthritis results from the breakdown and loss of cartilage in joints.

    Interaction of Glutamine and Glucosamine

    • Because glutamine and glucosamine are such different compounds and have such different uses in the body, there is no evidence that they are prone to dangerous interaction. Nevertheless, consult a doctor before beginning any new nutritional supplement regimen.
