Adobe Photoshop Portable is not an actual version of Photoshop offered by Adobe. Adobe Photoshop Portable is actually a user-created version of Photoshop with extraneous features removed to create a smaller version you can run from a USB drive.

  1. History

    • Thomas and John Knoll created Photoshop in the late 1980s as a digital alternative to dark room photo editing. Adobe, Inc. later struck a deal with the brothers and officially released Photoshop 1.0 in 1990 after almost a year of development.

    Significance

    • Over the past 20 years, Photoshop has evolved to become one of the most powerful image-editing programs in the world and is considered industry-standard software for Graphic Designers and commercial printers.

    Why Go Portable?

    • The popularity of netbook computers, often with small solid-state hard drives, leaves users with little storage space for their applications. Large applications like Adobe Photoshop will often fill up many solid-state drives, and on some netbooks, it may be too large to install at all.

    Obtaining Adobe Photoshop Portable

    • Because of the complex computer science involved in stripping the application down to a small enough size to run off a USB flash drive, many user opt to download pre-stripped versions of the program from peer-to-peer file networks and BitTorrent sites.

    Is It Legal?

    • If you own a legitimate copy of Photoshop and create your own portable version, it's not supported by Adobe Inc., but whether or not it's illegal is questionable if it's for your own personal use and you don't distribute the program. Downloading commercial software from Peer-to-Peer networks or BItTorrent sites is always illegal.
