If you end up with a lemon, there are laws to help you.

When you hear of a lemon law, you normally think of an unrepairable automobile. However, just about every electronic item you purchase is covered by standards designed to protect you from poor quality design and workmanship.

  1. Your Rights

    • You have the right to a full replacement or refund of your electronics under the Uniform Commercial Code.

    What Qualifies

    • The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act covers items you buy that come with a written warranty and cost over $25. The warranty must be fair to the consumer, and the law allows you to recover the cost of your legal fees if you win a case against a manufacturer.

    Warranties

    • Federal law states that in addition to the written warranty, any features in the instruction manual, or printed on the box your product came in, is automatically part of your warranty.

    No Warranty

    • If the item comes without a warranty, your state may be able to help you under "implied" warranty laws, depending on the situation.

    Records

    • Keep all sales receipts, including printouts of items you buy on-line, and any advertisements and other paperwork you used when deciding to buy your electronic item. If you contact a manufacturer about a problem, document the details in case you need to rely on the lemon law to solve the issue.
