Adhesive Tape Allergies

Adhesive Tape Allergies thumbnail
Adhesive tape has properties that can cause allergic reactions.

Allergies from adhesive tape stem from the product from which it is made: latex. According to Family Doctor, latex is derived from the liquid in rubber trees.

  1. The Facts

    • The rubber that forms the latex portion in adhesive tape has specific proteins that cause allergic reactions.

    Effects

    • Symptoms of adhesive tape allergies can range from mild to severe, states Family Doctor. Coughing, rash/blister, and itchy eyes are typical mild reactions. Severely allergic people can suffer from anaphylactic shock and present symptoms such as rapid/weak pulse, nausea and difficulty breathing.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Do not use adhesive tapes if there is a known reaction. If there is a reaction, consult your doctor for an ointment suitable for the situation, states Podiatry Network.

    Interesting Fact

    • Possible allergic reactions may occur in food products as well, because proteins that make up adhesive tape also occur in food proteins, such as banana or avocado.

    Warning

    • Consult your doctor if there is a reaction to adhesive tape or latex products. A blood test can be performed to verify the allergy.
