School Counselor Certification
The future and lives of many students have been shaped and influenced by the help of school counselors. School counselors help students choose their coursework and even plan their post-secondary journey. School counselors must obtain a certain level of education and/or certification to fulfill their roles.
-
Education
-
According to the American School Counselor Association, school counselors are required to have advanced degrees. They also must have completed coursework in subjects such as group counseling, human growth and development, career development and social and cultural foundations.
Considerations
-
The educational and certification requirements for school counselors vary from state to state. Some states require that a counselor hold a master's degree while others are satisfied with a bachelor's degree.
-
Examination
-
In states where certification is mandatory, prospective school counselors should expect to take an examination. Examinations vary from states to state, and there is no established national standard.
Teaching Certificate
-
In addition to educational and licensure requirements, counselors in some states must have teaching certificates and teaching experience. Since counselors often serve as mediators between students and teachers, a teachers certificate can help counselors maintain a clear unbiased perspective.
Function
-
Although school counselors are involved in students' academic issues, they are also heavily involved in personal issues. For example, a school counselor might help a student deal with a personal tragedy such as a loss of a loved one.
