Colitis, more commonly called ulcerative colitis, is a chronic disease. It is in a group of diseases called inflammatory bowel diseases. Ulcerative colitis results in the inflammation of the digestive tract. There is no cure for this condition, however it may be treated with medication. This disease is also not consistently active.

  1. Identification

    • The disease is considered active if you experience flare-ups of symptoms, according to Netdoctor. You may need bed rest if you have severe flare-ups. Alternatively, you may be in remission if you have relief from your symptoms.

    Symptoms

    • Some of the possible symptoms of ulcerative colitis can include diarrhea, bloody stool, stomach pains, fever and unexplained weight loss.

    • If you suspect you may have ulcerative colitis, your doctor may take blood samples and stool samples to analyze. He may also take X-rays and perform a colonoscopy.

    • You may still need to take your medication even if your disease is not currently active, according to NetDoctor. This will help control the ongoing inflammation. Follow all of your doctor's directions regarding medications.

    Treatment

    • Some of the medications that can be used to treat ulcerative colitis include hydrocortisone, mesalamine, sulfasalazine and olsalazine, according to Drugs.com.
