    • Tolnaftate is a medication used to treat fungal infections, such as athlete's foot, jock itch and ringworm. It blocks the growth of fungi that cause skin infections, according to Drugs.com. It may also be used for other conditions as recommended by a health care professional.

    Types

    • Tolnaftate is available in a powder, as well as a topical cream and spray. It may be sold under the names Absorbine Athlete's Foot, Blis-To-Sol, Desenex Spray, Dr Scholl's Fungal Nail Management Kit, Dr Scholl's Odor Destroyers Sport Spray, Lamisil Defense and Tinactin.

    Safety

    • According to Drugs.com, tolnaftate has not been formally assigned a pregnancy category by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), there have been no animal studies reported, and there is no controlled U.S. data in human pregnancy.

    Potential Side Effects

    • According to a Hungarian study Reported in 2004 in "Reproductive Toxicology," of 13 expectant mothers who were treated with tolnaftate spray during their pregnancies, four fetuses were born with cardiac defects, "signaling a potential teratogenic risk of tolnaftate." International collaboration is needed for a final conclusion since the number of cases and controls were limited.
