Also called "lazy yoga," Thai massage is a type of full-body massage that originated in Thailand. Thai massage certification programs are located in many major cities around the world. In Thailand, Thai massage schools teach northern style (slow, gentle) in Chiang Mai and southern style (faster, fewer repetitions) in Bangkok.

    1. Time Frame

      • Thai massage training is usually 30-50 hours per level, with a level completed in 5 to 7 days. Some Thai massage schools may combine levels. There may also be some out-of-class work for Thai massage certification.

      Curriculum

      • Basic Thai massage training programs cover body dynamics, centering practices, ergonomics, energy lines, history of Thai massage and sequencing. Students learn to work with acupressure points and how to move clients into passive yoga positions. Side-lying and inverted poses may be introduced in advanced Thai massage training courses.

      Cost

      • Fees can range from $200 to $900 (USD) per course. Many Thai massage schools require at least two courses for certification.

      Additional Training

      • Some Thai massage schools offer additional levels of training or special topics courses on reflexology, Thai herbal compresses, table massage or chair massage. After completing a Thai massage certification, some schools offer the chance for teacher training or internships.

      Regulation

      • Massage laws vary by location and Thai massage certification alone may not be considered sufficient massage training to meet state or national standards.
