Fenbendazole for Equine Ulcers

Performance horses are at a high risk of developing ulcers. Most ulcer issues derive from the way horses are fed. Limited time on feed, high grain diets and stress all lead to excess production of gastric acid. Use fenbendazole as alternative to blocking acid production.

Fenbendazole

Fenbendazole is a broad spectrum dewormer used to remove gastrointestinal parasites. It is from the family of benzimidazole anthelmintics (dewormer).

Reducing Acid Production

By reducing the production of acid, the occurrence of gastric ulcers can be reduced. Use fenbendazole to treat horses suspected to have ulcers.

Dosing

For treatment of ulcers, fenbendazole is dosed at 10 mg/kg. Give orally on a daily dosing interval. Consult a veterinarian for product and dosing options.

Omepromazole

Omeprazole is the only proton pump inhibitor licensed for use in horses in the United States; however, benzimidizole substitution has directly inhibited gastric production as well.

Increase Forage Intake

Grazing can help absorb excess acid production.

Increasing forage intake as well as decreasing grain intake helps reduce the occurrence of gastric ulcers. Offer hay or grass free choices whenever feasible.
