Difference in Contemporary & Modern Decor

Contemporary style.

Many people use the terms contemporary and modern interchangeably. In the world of decor and design, however, modern has a distinct look from the midcentury, while contemporary refers to present-day decorating schemes.

Types

Among the popular modern styles are midcentury modern, bohemian modern and vintage modern. Contemporary decor typically has a minimalist, monochromatic or neutral color scheme and aesthetic.

Features

Characteristics of modern design include low profiles, angular frames and abstract and geometric shapes in artwork, upholstery and textiles. Contemporary decor incorporates clean lines, reflective surfaces and innovative developments in design.

Effects

A modern decor may have a retro effect, featuring vintage pieces such as Formica tables, Eames chairs and ottomans upholstered in bark cloth. In contrast, contemporary decor may have a futuristic element, with innovations such as pod-like seating or modular shelving.

Time Frame

Modern decor may date from the 1950s up to the present day, but current pieces will have retro styling. Contemporary decor typically dates from the current decade though simple, streamlined pieces from earlier eras can blend into contemporary design.

Considerations

One of the prominent developments in contemporary decor that make it stand out from modern decor is green design. Many contemporary furnishings, textiles, building materials and finishes feature repurposed or recycled items, or may feature sustainable materials such as bamboo or hemp.
