One of 1500 species in the Palm family, the Coconut (sometimes referred to as coco) palm tree is widely regarded as one of the most useful trees in the world--used for everything from food and clothing, to fences. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Origin

    • Natives of India have cultivated the coconut tree for over 4,000 years. While fossilized coconuts have shown up in places like New Zealand, the actual country of origin remains unknown.

    Growth

    • A mature coconut tree can stretch from 80 to 100 feet tall and produce anywhere between 25 and 75 coconuts per year. Life expectancy ranges from 80 to 90 years.

    Production

    • With the Philippines and India leading the way, about 17 billion coconuts get harvested every year.

    Fruit

    • Coconut oil comes from the dried meat, or Copra, of the coconut fruit. The copra often gets used in baking, while the oil goes into things like margarine and soap. Inside the coconut is coconut water, which contains a variety of nutrients.

    Other Uses

    • Mats, baskets, and hats can be made from the palm leaves and dye from a coconut tree's roots. Wood from the tree, once cut into planks, goes by the name of porcupine wood.
