What is the Maryland Law for Mold in the House?
In 2008, Maryland enacted a new law concerning companies that provide home mold removal services. Mold exposure in the home may cause chronic health problems including asthma and allergies.
-
Licensing
-
The law requires licenses for entities that provide home removal or cleaning services. Entities offering mold inspection services must register with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission and also maintain insurance.
License Renewal
-
The commission issues licenses for a period of two years and licenses may be renewed prior to the expiration date. In order to renew a license, entities must submit a renewal application along with copies of employee license and certification along with proof of insurance.
-
Certification Requirements
-
In order to qualify for a license, the law requires that a company's employees be certified by an accrediting organization for mold removal services. License applicants must submit copies of certification along with insurance information to the commission.
Advertising
-
The law only allows licensed providers to advertise as licensed mold removal companies; licensed businesses must display a copy of their license in their business office.
Prohibitions
-
The law prohibits companies from providing mold removal services when the company has also provided mold assessment services within the past calendar year. The law also prohibits inducements, including offering financial incentives to mold assessors for business referrals.
