Define Mobile Commerce

Mobile commerce allows consumers to complete commercial transactions through the use of a mobile phone or a PDA. M-commerce is another name for mobile commerce; this form of purchasing is a business model.

  1. Brief History

    • M-commerce began in 1997 in the city of Helsinki, Finland. Two vending machines allowed mobile phone technology to be used to accept payments. Another important historical development for m-commerce was the introduction of the first 3-G network in Japan in 2001.

    Applications

    • Personalized applications, secure payment systems, and device independent applications are made possible through the use of m-commerce.

    Transformation

    • According to DR. Madan Lal Bhasis, the Head of the Accounting Department of Mazoon College of Oman, m-commerce is a part of the world's transformation that has evolved from agricultural, industrial and mechanical based societies into electronic civilizations.

    Technology

    • Mobile devices use 3-G (third generation digital phones) and wireless POS (point of sale) technology in order to perform m-commerce transactions.

    WAP

    • Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) allows mobile devices to search the Internet since it supports hypertext markup languages. M-commerce uses WAP technology for micro browsers which have small screen and memory size.
