English ivy is an easy to grow, shade tolerant plant, grown for landscaping use and as a houseplant. The cultivation of English ivy requires regular check ups for harmful bugs such as spider mites and aphids. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Aphids

    • Aphids are tiny insects which feed on English ivy leaves. Aphids gather on new growth in large bunches and can hinder growth and cause leaves to turn yellow.

    Spider Mites

    • Chlorophyll of English ivy is the prime food for spider mites, a tiny insect the size of a grain of salt. Plants infested with spider mites generally have yellow or red dots, and the plant eventually turns gray and dies.

    Mealybugs

    • Mealybugs congregate in bunches which look like cotton on plant stems and leaves. These pests will suck plant and reduce the vigor of any English ivy plant.

    Misconceptions

    • English ivy is generally a disease resistant plant even though it attracts a number of pests. Regular inspection for bug invaders can prevent any large pest problems.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Many bugs on English ivy can be easily sprayed off with a strong squirt of water from a garden hose or spray bottle. Horticultural oil is another effective tool to rid ivy plants of destructive pests.
