Other Uses for Solid Wood Interior Doors

Other Uses for Solid Wood Interior Doors thumbnail
Interior wood doors can serve other uses than the obvious.

Doors provide safety, privacy and heat or coolness containment. But interior wood doors can also be used for other home purposes--think desks, room dividers and a coffee table, for instance. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Desks

    • Probably the most common alternative for wood interior doors is a desk. Place 2 two-drawer file cabinets about four feet apart and lay the door on the top (without the door knob, of course.) If the door is not flat, placing a piece of safety glass on top will create a smooth work surface.

    Room Dividers

    • Wood doors can create a very functional room divider. Take two or three doors and hinge them together in two spots, one hinge about a foot from the top, and the other the same distance from the bottom. Leaving the door knobs on can create an interesting effect and a place to hang a basket, perhaps. Place one of these behind a sofa that is angled, and you'll have a great filler for the space.

    Coffee Tables

    • Using an old wooden door with a little wear and tear on it as a coffee table is another home decor possibility. Attaching regular metal or wood legs bought at a hardware store is one way to prop the top. Cinder blocks, bricks, four-by-fours and four leveled-off tree trunks are other possibilities for unique legs.

    Headboards

    • Headboards made from doors are another creative use of them. Arrange two or three doors (depending on the width of your bed) on the floor and screw two cross boards on the backside to hold them together. Place it behind the bed against the wall. For safety, attach the headboard to the wall with brackets.

    Privacy Screens

    • Use the same technique that you used to connect the doors for a room divider to connect three doors for a privacy screen. The only difference is that you will use three doors with glass inserts. Then install a set of curtain rods to each door and stretch patio-door curtains on them. That will allow light to filter through while still providing privacy.
