Jacuzzi Tubs & Pregnancy

Jacuzzi Tubs & Pregnancy thumbnail
Jacuzzi tubs are safe during pregnancy.

Many women believe that because hot tubs are not allowed during pregnancy, that this means Jacuzzi tubs are out too. This is not an absolute. Although some precautions need to be taken, it is safe for a pregnant woman to take a bath in a Jacuzzi tub.

  1. Misconceptions

    • A Jacuzzi tub is similar to a hot tub in that it has water jets. The main difference between the two is that a hot tub will continually heat the water and the Jacuzzi tub will not and can be made cooler or hotter, according to your liking.

    Considerations

    • Though it is safe to take a bath in a Jacuzzi tub while you are pregnant, there are some things of which you should be aware. When the jets are on, you need to make sure that they do not forcefully propel water near your vagina, according to Dr. Marjorie Greenfield, writing for the Dr. Spock Company.

    Temperature

    • Parenting.com recommends keeping the temperature of a Jacuzzi tub no higher than 100 degrees F when taking a bath while pregnant. The March of Dimes advises that a pregnant woman's body temperature should never be higher than 102.2 degrees F for more than 10 minutes, therefore, you should keep the water cooler than this and take short Jacuzzi baths to avoid raising your core temperature.

    Warning

    • A Jacuzzi tub is usually deeper than a normal bathtub. This means that more of your body will be submerged in the water. This could raise your body temperature to unsafe levels if you have the water too hot. Be careful to only use warm water, and not hot water.

    Ask Your Doctor

    • As with any questions or concerns that you may have during your pregnancy, it is always best to discuss them with your doctor.
