An adult Maltese can weigh five to fifteen pounds.

Maltese litters typically have three puppies that weigh about four ounces each. The eyes and ears of a Maltese puppy will remain closed for about 12 days. The babies are unable to regulate their own body temperature for about the same amount of time and remain warming together near their mother.

  1. One to Two Weeks

    • The noses of Maltese puppies are pink at birth and will begin spotting with black pigmentation by day eight. According to Majesty Maltese, puppies will display their shiver reflex after a week but still require a temperature around 85 degrees. Eyes and ears open and body temperature can be regulated internally after two weeks.

    Three to Four Weeks

    • The puppies are finally able to see and hear well and motor skills have improved enough to allow for play and timid ventures. Maltese puppies can recognize voices and are finding their own voice after four weeks.

    Five Weeks to Seven Weeks

    • The distinct Maltese tail is straight up on a five-week-old puppy. During this time the puppies learn basic life skills like canine communication and advancing motor coordination.

    Eight to Ten Weeks

    • Maltese puppies develop baby teeth relatively late; around eight weeks, according to Pet Maltese. At nine weeks the puppy will weigh about one and a half pounds and be gnawing on kibble. The first haircut will be needed around 10 weeks.

    Three Months to Yearling

    • After three months the puppy should be have improved bowel control. Maltese puppies will begin losing their baby teeth around five months and the teething process can continue for about six months.
