Diastasis Recti Symptoms

Diastasis recti occurs in infants and women who have had multiple pregnancies. It is a separation of the abdominal muscles that causes a protrusion of the muscles that becomes visible on the outside of the abdomen.

  1. Causes

    • The condition usually occurs in premature babies. Multiple pregnancies puts pressure on the abdominal muscles and can cause diastasis recti to occur.

    Exercises

    • Abdominal exercises after twelve weeks of pregnancy may cause the condition to become worse. After childbirth however, exercises may help the condition to improve, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, but patients should discuss this with their doctor before starting.

    Surgery

    • Tummy tuck surgery can repair the muscles and eliminate the separation in women and men with the condition. Babies may require surgery if the condition worsens or there is pain and an indication of a hernia.

    Treatments

    • There is no need for treatment in most cases, but the condition can persist long after childbirth, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. In babies, diastasis hernia disappears as the muscles grow and develop.

    Warning

    • Complications can result in the condition in patients who develop a hernia. Children who have significant pain, vomiting and redness in the area must see a doctor immediately, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
