Beet Allergy

Beet allergies can affect dogs and cats.

Both dogs and cats can have beet allergies, which can cause a number of adverse symptoms. Most veterinarians can correctly identify a beet allergy and put the animal on a special diet. Meanwhile, there are certain topical solutions one can use on a pet for temporary relief.

  1. Significance

    • Dogs and cats usually suffer from itchy skin. Their natural reaction is to scratch the area that itches. Continual scratching of the skin can cause redness, suppuration (pus discharge) and patches of hair loss.

    Identification

    • Most commercial pet foods contain beet pulp. A dog or cat that eats these foods may have problems digesting the sugar in beet pulp.

    Effects

    • Cats and dogs, in particular, may develop ear infections from beet allergies. Other symptoms for both animals can include watery eyes, an upset stomach and even vomiting.

    Prevention/Solution

    • A pet's veterinarian may give the owner antihistamines or a cortisone spray to use on the dog or cat. Witch hazel can be tried as well. Sometimes a skin or blood test may be required to fully detect a beet allergy.

    Considerations

    • The best solution for resolving a pet's beet allergy often entails eliminating food with beet pulp. The veterinarian may recommend a hypoallergenic brand, based on the assessment of any other food allergies or intolerance, according to the Cold River Veterinarian Center.
