Organic Grass Care
Organic grasses, those grown without the use of pesticides and insecticides, require special care in order to grow green and lush. The most important steps in organic grass maintenance are watering and mowing. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Frequency of Mowing
-
Organic grass should be mowed often so that one third of the grass blade is being removed. Weekly cutting is typically sufficient. Cutting too much may stress the grass, which makes them more prone to diseases and pests.
Mowing to Correct Height
-
In the spring, cut grass to a height of 2 1/2 to 3 inches high. In summer, keep grass at least 3 inches long. Cutting grass too short can damage the root system.
-
Direction of Cut
-
Change the direction in which you cut the grass each week. This helps reduce soil compaction and stress on the lawn.
Mulching
-
Allow the grass clipping to provide natural mulching for the lawn. This helps provide nutrients for the soil.
Watering Frequency
-
Water the grass until water reaches 6 to 8 inches into the soil. Water again when the soil is completely dry to keep roots healthy.
Time of Day for Watering
-
Water early in the morning to mimic natural dew and allow the grass to dry throughout the day. Early morning watering helps prevent root and fungus that develop when the ground is too wet.
