What Is a Cropped Tuxedo Jacket?
A cropped tuxedo jacket is technically a tuxedo jacket that is shorter than a traditional tux jacket. Simply chopping off the length of a tuxedo jacket will not give you a cropped tux jacket however, as there are other features that define a cropped tuxedo jacket.
-
Sleeves
-
The sleeves on a cropped tuxedo jacket are usually longer than regular tuxedo jacket sleeves. Whereas typical tux sleeves come to the base of the wrist joint where hand and wrist meet, the sleeves on a cropped tux jacket are about an inch longer so the edge rests just above the deepest thumb joint.
Waistline
-
The cropped tuxedo jacket is shortened so that the bottom edge of the jacket generally reaches to just above the waist. There isn't always an actual waistline, but the bottom of the jacket and the cut of the front and back pieces create a shapeliness about the waist area. Often the design of a cropped tuxedo jacket draws attention to the waistline which makes it an attractive and feminine piece of clothing.

Shape
-
Most cropped tuxedo jackets have an even hem, meaning that they are the same length in front as they are in back. However, some cropped tuxedo jackets may have a cropped waist in front and "tails" in back. These are usually worn by men for formal occasions. Many women's cropped tuxedo jackets have a curved shape to the hem.
Fabric and Color
-
Traditional cropped tuxedo jackets are black and made out of a fine fabric such as wool, silk or high polyester blends. However, there is no strict rule about this and many creative designs of cropped tuxedo jackets are made out of cottons, knits and other fabrics and in a variety of colors.
Trimmings
-
One of the signature features of a cropped tuxedo jacket is the satin trim. Again, not all cropped tuxedos have this but many do. The satin trim may run along the side or the outside of the collar or lapel.
