Water Softener Failure Symptoms
Water softener appliances are used when the water coming into a home is filled with minerals. Those minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, make the water “hard.” When the softener is no longer working, the water will remain hard. There are several signs of water softener system failure. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Dishes are Spotty After Washing
-
Soft water creates a rich lather when soap or detergent is used. The lather washes off cleanly. When the water remains hard, the minerals in it will stick to dishes and glasses. Spots on the glasses after they dry is the easiest sign that the water softener is not doing its job.
Skin and Hair Do Not Feel Silky When Showering
-
Soft water causes soap and shampoo to take on a "silky" feel when showering. Both will lather easily. If the water is hard, more shampoo will be needed, the soap and shampoo will not wash off as easily.
-
Washed Clothes Look Dingy
-
Clothes washed in hard water come out less bright and clean than they should, and will have a harsh or scratchy feel to them. This is caused by the minerals sticking to the clothes and not being thoroughly rinsed.
Drinking Water Has No Saltiness
-
Some may consider this a plus to the softener's failure. Many people prefer the taste of hard water to softened water. Because of the salt that is used to remove the calcium and magnesium from hard water, there is often a very slight salty taste to softened water. Hard water does not have any saltiness.
Pipes Clog
-
The minerals in hard water will stick to the inside of pipes (often said to cause "scales" to form in the pipes). In time, this will cause the pipes to clog. Any loss of water flow through pipes is serious and the water softener should be checked.
