Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server are both designed to support multiple CPUs (central processing units), with 2000 Server offering support for up to four CPUs and Advanced Server offering support for up to eight.
Infrastructural Roles

Windows 2000 Server can function as a domain controller offering services for file and print sharing, as well as acting as an application server for products such as SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange. In addition, Windows 2000 Advanced Server is designed to meet the needs of larger organizations, offering such features as increased processor power to more effectively address mission-critical functions, clustering technology to limit system downtime and offer more robust application support.

Microsoft's published minimum hardware requirements for both 2000 Server and 2000 Advanced Server include a Pentium 133-MHz CPU and 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM. To fully utilize 2000 Advanced Server, however, will require a motherboard capable of housing four additional CPUs and up to 4 additional gigabytes (GB) of RAM, up to a maximum of 8 GB, which surpasses 2000 Server's maximum of 4 GB.
Price Considerations

Windows 2000 Advanced Server is significantly more expensive than 2000 Server. 2000 Advanced Server is typically sold on the market providing support for a minimum of 25 network clients at a cost of approximately $665, as of March 2010. You can obtain an entry-level version for 2000 Server, however, for $450 or less.
