Coding Specialist Job Description
In order for physicians and health=care facilities to receive payments from health insurance companies, insurers must receive medical reimbursement requests or claims from providers. Coding specialists are the individuals responsible for preparing these claims.

Coding specialists work in health-care settings, assigning special alphanumeric codes to diagnoses and procedures performed on patients in order to request payment from insurance companies. These codes are then submitted to insurance companies, which use the information to determine whether or not to submit reimbursement for a claim, and if so, for how much.

Successful coding specialists possess the ability to quickly memorize information and flexibility in order to adapt to the frequent changes that occur in the codes insurance companies use for claims. Specialists must also have data entry, spreadsheet, database and typing skills as well as working knowledge of medical terminology.

The coding specialist education programs necessary for employment in the field typically result in a certificate or diploma and are held at medical, vocational, technical and community colleges. Programs typically last one year to two years.
Certification

The American Health Information Management Association grants voluntary certification for coding specialists. Requirements include graduating from a school approved by the association and passing a written examination.
