Knots Used for Tree Climbing

The three most common knots used for climbing trees are hitches, bends and loops. Each has a specific use and contributes to the safety and convenience tree climbers want.

  1. Hitch Knot

    • The hitch knot is used for attaching a rope to an object, a climber or another rope. It is used in climbing because most hitches are quick to tie and provide great temporary holds.

    Hitch Types

    • The Bachman hitch is used to hang a load, such as food or tools, from a rope. The girth hitch is used for quickly attaching a loop to an object. It can be used to connect hanging gear to a climbing harness.

    Bends

    • Bends are very strong knots used for securing the climber to a tree to prevent falling. These knots do not come untied easily the way hitches can.

    Most Common Bend

    • The figure-eight bend is created by weaving together two figure-eight knots. Climbers tend to use this knot because of its great strength.

    Loop Knot

    • Loops are used by tree climbers when they need to hoist heavy equipment. Loops have the ability to not change size no matter how much weight is applied to them.

    Loop Types

    • The alpine butterfly loop is the knot by which a climber is attached to the middle of a rope. It can stand up to tension from both ends without weakening. The Spanish bowline is used to hoist heavy equipment like a chainsaw or for rescuing an injured climber.
