The intelligent and outgoing Pomeranian is a toy breed with a large personality. Looking like a little fox, its diminutive size makes it a good choice for apartment dwellers or those without a large yard.

    • The Pomeranian originally weighed 30 pounds and was used as a sled or herding dog. Through the years, it was bred down to the toy size, according to the American Kennel Club.

    Identification

    • The full grown Pomeranian weighs between 3 and 7 pounds and stands 7 to 12 inches high. It is double coated, possessing a straight, long outer coat and a thicker, shorter and softer undercoat. The Pomeranian comes in all colors, with the most popular being red and orange.

    Health

    • Typical Pomeranian health issues include irritated skin, tooth deterioration, eye infections, dislocated kneecaps and heart problems. They can live up to 15 years.

    Considerations

    • The Pomeranian sheds. Frequent brushing is needed due to its double coat. This breed loves to please and demands a lot of attention from its owner.
