Audio CDs are subject to many different copyright protections.

Copyright law applies in many different ways to music, including the recording and composition of the entire work. Copyrights on music compact discs or CDs, pose additional hurdles as to the licensing of creative works.

    When Copyright Law is Violated for Audio CDs

    • Copyright laws are violated when a person or entity infringes on the copyright holder's rights. Copying an audio CD for a friend, creating a mix CD of digital tracks, disseminating digital music tracks, or even sampling from a digital audio track can violate of copyright law and trigger legal actions.

    Fines & Penalties for Violations

    • Penalties for violating copyright law may result in significant fines. Before penalty, a copyright violator must knowingly violate the copyright. By defying a "cease and desist" order from the copyright holder to stop using or distributing the work, a person violates copyright law.
