Itchy Ears on Dogs

Long-eared dogs such as beagles are more susceptible to itchy ears.

Itchy ears are more common in some dogs than others, and especially in those who have long, droopy ears such as basset hounds or cocker spaniels. Itchy ears can be caused by a number of factors.

  1. Ear Mites

    • Ear mites can cause a dog's ears to itch. Ear mites are usually accompanied by a wax that has a similar appearance to coffee grounds. Ear mites can be treated with specialized ear drops.

    Infection

    • A yellow discharge from the dog's ears suggests a yeast or bacterial infection. Ear drops may be necessary to clear up the infection.

    Allergies

    • Allergies can cause a dog to have itchy ears. Dogs suffering from allergies may also lick their feet or face obsessively. Allergies are often caused by bug bites, air pollutants or food ingredients.

    Trauma

    • Trauma to the ear can cause a dog to scratch it repeatedly. Cleaning a dog's ear with a cotton bud can cause trauma, as can excessive scratching.

    Tumors

    • While uncommon, itchy ears could suggest a tumor in the dog's ear. If all other causes have been ruled out, a veterinarian may suggest a biopsy to test for cancer.
