DLP vs. LCD Projectors

LCD and DLP projectors produce images differently.

LCD and DLP home theater projectors both display images on a screen and are similar in cost. However, differences exist in the way LCD projectors and DLP projectors show images, and the way images appear.

  1. Light Projection

    • DLP projectors were developed by Texas Instruments, according to Guides and Tutorials. Light is reflected from tiny mirrors equaling pixels. The angles of the mirrors help create the colors of an image. LCD projectors shine light through transparent polysillicon LCD cells. The LCD cells use red, green and blue color panels; and color combinations create the images that appear on a screen.

    Color

    • LCD projectors produce colors that are more saturated than the colors produced by a DLP projector. DLP projectors do produce deeper blacks than an LCD projector. DLPs tend to produce duller reds and yellows than LCD projectors. DLP projectors also tend to have a rainbow effect that LCD projectors do not.

    Images

    • The images from LCD projectors are sharper than those produced by DLP projectors, but images may also appear more pixelated. Images produced by DLP projectors have a higher contrast, but highly detailed images may not be very clear. Images on DLP projectors look more like images that appear on film than LCD projectors.
