Dengue fever causes itchy skin.

Dengue fever is a viral infection predominately found in tropical areas. The virus is spread by mosquitos and often causes temporary but severe discomfort along with itchy skin rashes.

  1. Description

    • Dengue fever generally lasts around one week. It starts with a high fever and causes itchy, sensitive and irritated red skin. Although dengue fever can be extremely uncomfortable, it usually does not result in death.

    Symptoms

    • Dengue fever symptoms start shortly after a person is infected. The high fever may reach up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit, and the itchy rash occurs sporadically on the body and around the mosquito bite. Other common symptoms are headache, fatigue, joint aches, muscle aches, nausea and vomiting.

    Treatment

    • There is no specific medication for curing dengue fever. However, acetaminophen, or Tylenol, is often used to lower a high fever. Patients should stay hydrated in order to fight off the virus. In the case of extremely high fever, you should seek professional help right away.

    Mosquito Type and Location

    • Dengue fever is spread by various types of mosquitos, but primarily the Aedes aegypti, which is found mostly in southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, South and Central America, and the Indonesian archipelago into northeastern Australia.

    Warning

    • If you receive a mosquito bite and get a rash along with itchiness, seek medical attention. This is especially recommended if you are located in the tropical areas where dengue fever is commonly found.
