Pocket Laser Levels

A pocket laser level is a small box-like tool that projects one or multiple laser beams in various directions for use in the construction industry. The laser beams help construction workers layout straight, horizontal and vertical lines to increase productivity, as opposed to the antiquated uses of string lines and plumb bobs.

  1. History

    • According to the "Chicago Tribune," lasers were developed and in use from as far back as 1960. Initially, lasers were extremely expensive when introduced to the construction industry, but as technology improved from helium neon vacuum tubes to small laser diodes, their use increased dramatically.

    Function

    • Projecting anywhere from one beam to five beams, the pocket laser level has many uses: setting building points or corners, laying concrete or asphalt, setting up drywall and hanging ceilings.

    Types

    • The one horizontal beam laser is for generating a straight line, down a corridor for example. The two beam laser (horizontal and vertical) creates a 90-degree angle. The three beam laser creates a virtual 90-degree corner with two horizontal beams and one vertical beam. The five beam laser creates a "+" laser beam, as well as a plumb beam down to the floor.

    Considerations

    • Pocket laser levels are self-leveling up to plus or minus 4 degrees of level. The beam can also shake a bit, so using the tool in a low vibration area is key.

    Significance

    • The construction industry has grown in leaps and bounds, especially in regards to productivity, with the use of pocket laser levels. It is considered a necessity for the industry to keep projects on time.
