In modern times, widespread use of personal digital assistants (PDAs) has diminished greatly. Much more common are smart phones like iPhones, Androids and BlackBerries. That doesn't mean that there is no longer a place for the PDA, though.

The primary difference between a smart phone and a PDA is the ability to make calls. When deciding between a smart phone and a PDA, this should be the main concern: Will you use the device to make calls? If you already have a separate dedicated phone, a PDA may suffice.
Data Services

Early PDAs did not include any data services, so the only data transfer occurred when the PDA was docked to a computer. This allowed users to synchronize their contacts, e-mails and calendar information between their computer and their PDA, but with the advent of always-connected smart phones, this paradigm is obsolete. If you expect to use data regularly, a PDA most likely will not serve your needs.

The only exception to the data issue raised above is if you will be using the device in a single location that has a wireless network. Many PDAs have Wi-Fi connectivity, so if your device will be used primarily to scan inventory at a warehouse or to look up information quickly in an office environment, a cellular data connection probably won't be necessary.
Size and Weight

Since most modern smart phones are no smaller than PDAs, carrying around both a phone and a PDA can be redundant. The main question, then, is mobility; if you'll be using your device on the go, a smart phone is a better option. If you only need a phone on the go but need PDA functionality while at the office, having separate devices may better fit your needs.
Prices

Many modern smart phones are inexpensive, especially with carrier subsidies. In fact, most phones without "smart" functionality can be obrained for free with many cellular contracts. In contrast, PDAs often cost hundreds of dollars, and there is no subsidy to lessen the blow. Keep in mind, however, that most smart phones require an additional data plan, which adds up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars over the term of a contract.

The choice between a smart phone and a PDA truly comes down to your personal needs. Most users will find a smart phone to be a better fit. However, it's important to think about whether a Wi-Fi connection can substitute for your data link; if so, getting a smart phone can cost you hundreds of dollars more than you would pay if you got a PDA instead.
