Adrenal Fatigue

Secondary adrenal insufficiency, known as adrenal fatigue, occurs when cortisol production fails due to the pituitary gland not producing enough adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) says the National Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases Information Service website. Doctors prescribe synthetic cortisol in the form of a glucocorticoid, such as hydrocortisone, in tablet form to be taken one to three times per day for treatment.
Addison's Disease

Damaged adrenal glands can cause Addison's disease, or primary adrenal insufficiency. According to the National Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases Information Service website, this condition is also treated with synthetic cortisol. When aldolsterone production proves insufficient during a case of Addison's disease, physicians commonly recommend a prescription of fludrocortisones acetate to restore aldolsterone levels.

Cushing's Syndrome

When the body is exposed to prolonged, high levels of cortisol, Cushing's syndrome or hypercortisolism may occur. Drugs that help to control excess cortisol levels include ketoconazole, aminoglutethimide and metyrapone.
Tumors

Adrenal tumors may cause an over or under production of steroid hormones. Chemotherapy treatments aid in controlling, preventing and possibly shrinking, tumors. According to the American Cancer Society website, the most commonly prescribed chemotherapy drug is mitotane.
Side Effects

Corticosteroid side effects include nausea, headache, insomnia, anxiety, acne, and depression. Serious side effects include skin rash, swollen face, legs or ankles, vision problems and muscle weakness. Side effects of chemotherapy include nausea, loss of appetite, hair loss, mouth sores, rashes, fatigue and bruising.
