Maltese dogs can be prone to intestinal problems

Maltese dogs are small, white dogs that love to play and are loyal to their owners. Some Maltese dogs are prone to digestive problems such as intestinal infections.

  1. Diagnosis

    • Your veterinarian will run a series of blood tests to determine the cause of your Maltese's intestinal infection.

    Parasites

    • Intestinal parasites can cause intestinal infections in Maltese dogs. Parasites include tapeworms, roundworms and hookworms. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and anemia.

    Intestinal Virus Infection

    • Intestinal virus (retrovirus) infections cause the destruction of cells within your Maltese dog's intestinal walls. According to the PetMD.com website, retrovirus infections are contracted through contact with infected feces, or by inhaling airborne virus particles. The virus limits the amount of nutrients that the intestines can absorb, resulting in dehydration and diarrhea.

    Treatment

    • Parasites can be treated with medication prescribed by your veterinarian. Retrovirus infections are treated with observation, hydration and rest. Since retrovirus infections can be contagious, you may need to quarantine your Maltese until it has fully recovered.

    Prevention

    • Intestinal parasites can be prevented with a monthly anti-flea, tick and heartworm medication. Both the retrovirus and parasites can be prevented by removing feces from common areas as often as possible.
