Comparisons of Infant Formula
Infant formula is a way to give your baby nutrition if she is unwilling or unable to drink breast milk. Finding the right formula involves comparing and contrasting several factors. Keep your baby's needs in mind when comparing formulas.
-
Base
-
Formulas can be either iron-fortified cow's milk, soy, or elemental based.
Iron-Fortified Formula
-
Iron-fortified formulas are most common and are based on cow's milk. Most infants can drink these kinds of formula if they have no special dietary needs.
-
Soy Formula
-
Soy protein is the base for these formulas. They are lactose-free and good for children who can't handle lactose products.
Elemental Formula
-
These formulas are made with hydrolysate proteins and work well for children who are allergic to proteins. Elemental formulas are also lactose-free.
Preemie Formula
-
Infants who were born prematurely can drink special preemie-formulated milk. This milk provides extra nutrition to help the baby grow.
Form
-
Formulas come in either powder, concentrated or ready-to-feed forms. Powder formulas are cheapest but least convenient, while ready-to-feed is easiest but most expensive.
