If a dog is coughing and vomiting repeatedly, chances are it should be taken to a veterinarian for a checkup. Coughing and vomiting can be symptoms of many illnesses, ranging from mild to severe.

  1. Kennel Cough

    • Bordatella, or kennel cough, produces a dry cough in dogs that can lead to vomiting. Kennel cough is usually picked up at a pound, kennel or boarding facility.

    Tonsillitis

    • Coughing and vomiting can be a sign of tonsillitis in dogs. Canine tonsillitis can usually be cleared up with antibiotics.

    Bloat

    • Bloat is a serious illness that is caused by excess air in the stomach, usually due to a dog eating too quickly. Coughing and attempts to vomit are both symptoms of bloat, along with a bloated, tight abdomen, anxiety and a hunched-up appearance.

    Congestive Heart Disease

    • Coughing and vomiting are both early signs of congestive heart disease, which can prove to be fatal if left untreated. Congestive heart disease usually affects older dogs.

    Distemper

    • Canine distemper is a viral disease that produces coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and lethargy, among other symptoms. Distemper is extremely contagious and can be fatal.
