Federal Safety Standards for Crib Dimensions
There are so many things to consider before purchasing a crib. When comparison shopping, ensuring that the crib meets federal safety regulations is important.
-
Overall Size
-
Snug Crib Mattress According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), a full-size crib is 52 inches long by 28 inches wide. The crib mattress should measure at least 27 and one-fourth inches by 51 and five-eighths inches. The thickness of the mattress should not exceed 6 inches, and will fit snugly allowing no more than a width of two fingers between the edge of the mattress and the crib frame. The mattress support should be set so that the baby cannot crawl out of the crib.
Crib Rails
-
If the crib has adjustable rails, the top of the rail at its highest position must be a minimum of 26 inches above the mattress support while in its lowest position. The top of the rail at its lowest position should be a minimum of nine inches above the top of the mattress support at its highest.
-
Crib Slats
-
Federal safety standards also require that the slats, spindles, or posts in a crib be a maximum of 2 3/8 inches apart.
Corner Posts
-
To prevent the baby's clothing from becoming entangled, the corner posts should be no higher than 1/16th of an inch above the end panels.
Location and Decor
-
Cribs should not have decorative styles that can trap the baby's head or body, such as cutouts in the headboard or footboard. Besides the crib itself, there are other safety measures regarding the location of the crib. The crib away should be kept away from drapes, ribbons, cords, or any type of wall hanging to avoid injury.
