What Is Metal Halide?

A metal halide is a chemical salt formed by a metal and an element from the chemical class of halogens that include chlorine, bromine and iodine. Metal halide compounds are used in lighting products with some very beneficial characteristics.

  1. Use in Lighting

    • When metal halides are added to quartz lamps they vaporize and provide light that complements what is produced from the existing lamp, filling in the gaps in the spectrum. The added compounds also reduce the production of unwanted ultraviolet light.

    Bulb Life

    • Metal halide lamps can endure up to 20,000 hours of use, about 20 times that of incandescent lamps.

    Light Quality

    • The quality of the light from metal halide lamps is much closer to that of natural sunlight than other light sources. A wide range of color temperatures can also be achieved by adjusting the mix of the added salts.

    Lighting Efficiency

    • Because the output of metal halide lamps is concentrated more in the visible light range, it is much more efficient. The light output per watt is higher than fluorescent tubes and about five times better than incandescent lamps.

    Uses of Metal Halide Lamps

    • Their superior light quality, small size and efficient outputs make metal halides useful in a variety of commercial settings from outdoor sports settings and large retail buildings to interior office space.
