What Is a Belt & Disc Sander?

Belt sanders and disc sanders are both power tools used to smooth the surfaces of wood and other materials. Each sander is best suited to a particular type of work. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Belt Sander

    • A belt sander smoothes surfaces by means of a continuous loop, or belt, of abrasive material that is fitted around two rotating wheels. Belt sanders may be hand-held or stationary.

    Disc Sander

    • Disc sanders are also available in hand-held and stationary models. A disc sander has a wheel, or disc, of abrasive material that rotates to smooth surfaces.

    Function

    • Belt sanders are effective for removing large amounts of wood quickly and are typically used in the initial phase of sanding. Disc sanders may be used to sand wood, metal or plastics.

    Features

    • Hand-held disc sanders may be fitted not only with sandpaper discs but also grinding wheels, as well as soft materials for buffing and polishing. Belt sanders may feature a speed control and a dust collector.

    Considerations

    • You should use caution when operating belt and disc sanders. Unplug the sanders before changing belts, discs and attachments.
