Spastic Colon & Lower Left Abdominal Pain

Spastic colon is another name for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a digestive condition, according to the Mayo Clinic. People with IBS experience a variety of abdominal discomforts, and pain in the lower left abdomen is common with this condition.

Symptoms

In addition to pain in the lower abdomen, typical symptoms of spastic colon include abdominal bloating, gas, constipation, loose stools and traces of mucus in stools.

Diet

Certain foods can trigger spastic colon and lower abdominal pain. Eliminating foods that induce symptoms can help relieve symptoms and prevent future problems. Typical problem foods include carbonated drinks, lactose, chocolate and certain fruits and vegetables.

Exercise

Although it's difficult to exercise with stomach pain, regular movement through exercise helps regulate intestinal contractions and relieves constipation associated with spastic colon. This reduces intestinal gas and abdominal pain or cramping.

Water

Hard or infrequent stools contribute to discomfort with a spastic colon. Consuming water helps soften stools and promotes bowel activity, which eases constipation and pain associated with irregular bowel movements.

Warning

Over-the-counter products such as laxatives are useful for managing constipation caused by a spastic colon. However, these products are potentially habit forming and should be used as a last resort, according to the Mayo Clinic. Experiment with natural fiber supplements or slowly increase your intake of fiber-rich foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains) to avoid diarrhea.
