What Are Common Skeletal System Injuries? thumbnail
Skeletal system injuries require surgery.

Movement is the chief function of the human musculoskeletal system. The skeletal system consists of the bones, ligaments, joints and tendons. Injuries common to the skeletal system are typically treated following the RICE method: Rest, ice, compression and elevation. Some injuries require casting or surgery.

  1. Fractures

    • Fractures are breaks and cracks in bone tissue. When the broken bone pierces skin it is a compound fracture. Comminuted fractures result in multiple bone fragments. Osteoporosis, sports injury, falls and automobile accidents are typical causes of broken bones. Due to overuse, stress fractures are among the most common sports injuries, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

    Joint Dislocations

    • A dislocation refers to a bone being out of it's place, commonly occurring at the shoulder or hip joints. It is characterized by excruciating pain, swelling and looks misshapen. Dislocations commonly occur with torn ligaments.

    Tendonitis

    • Tendons are white, elastic connective tissue, responsible for connecting muscle to bone. As muscle contracts, tendon pulls on bone forcing it to move. Tendonitis is an inflammation of tendon, causing peripheral joint pain. It commonly occurs in the elbow, shoulder and heels.

    Muscle Strain

    • Commonly referred to as "pulled muscles," muscle strain occurs when muscle tissue tears. It is manifest by swelling and pain.

    Sprains

    • When ligaments are overstretched, it causes swelling, bruising and joint pain. They may also tear. Like tendons, ligaments are elastic bands allowing for flexibility. However, ligaments attach bone to bone. Serious ligament tears can interfere with the function of muscle and may even require surgical repair.
